New York City is a place with so many art galleries, which all have shows that only run for so long—it can be hard to keep track. Amidst all the rotating exhibitions, we selected a few that we feel are worth checking out as the months grow cooler.
Citing Black Geographies
- Richard Gray Gallery | November 17 – December 23
An exhibition hitting both Chicago and New York City, “Citing Black Geographies” is a group show exploring “black space” in its variations. The artists include Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Dawoud Bey, McArthur Binion, the Black Arts Movement School Modality, Nick Cave, Coco Fusco, Theaster Gates, Rashid Johnson, Tony Lewis, the Staples Jr. Singers, Tavares Strachan, Jan Tichy, Jina Valentine, Carrie Mae Weems and Amanda Williams. Running from November 17 through December 23, 2022, this show is jam packed with talent.
Sahara Longe’s “In the Garden”
- Deli Gallery | September 8 – October 1
Deli Gallery at 36 White Street is currently running a solo show of British artist Sahara Longe. “In the Garden” is a collection of fantastic portraits that will draw in audiences but also leave them wondering, as the subjects blur with their environments. Longe’s show opened September 8 and will run through October 1, making it the perfect option for a fall date.
Tiffany Chung’s “Archaeology for Future Remembrance”
- Davidson Gallery | September 8 – October 22
I’m really taken with this exhibition at Davidson Gallery, “Archaeology for Future Remembrance” by artist Tiffany Chung, who has a simultaneous concurrent exhibition at Davidson. It opened September 8 but will run through October 22. In the selected exhibition, the prolific artist explores the treatment of Vietnamese people within the context of a government influenced by a colonial past. It also includes a fascinating variety of objects, catering to those who enjoy textured exhibitions.
Jorge Tacla’s “Stagings/Escenarios”
- Cristin Tierney | September 9 – October 22
The Chilean-American artist Jorge Tacla has a solo exhibition at Cristin Tierney curated by Christian Viveros-Fauné featuring oil, cold wax and marble powder paintings of mass change. It is clear Jorge Tacla is an artist of our time. The exhibition runs September 9 through October 22.
Na Mira’s “Tetraphobia”
- Company | September 8 – October 15
The multi-talented, Los Angeles-based artist Na Mira has a show at Company running from September 8 through October 15 titled “Tetraphobia.” Na Mira is no stranger to New York City, with previous exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, and even an expected book of writings through the Brooklyn-based Wendy’s Subway. It’s worth keeping an eye on this artist.
Natalie Wadlington’s “Front Yards, Back Yards”
- albertz benda | September 9 – October 8
Good old albertz benda rarely disappoints and their Natalie Wadlington exhibition is no exception. Running from September 9 through October 8, Wadlington’s gorgeous, giant women with pets take up the gallery space and fill it with color. Of course, you do run the risk of wanting to go home to your pet, and a pet-themed exhibition begs the question: are dogs allowed?
